Hate Crime & Incidents

According to North Yorkshire Police, hate crime is any criminally chargeable offence which is considered, by the victim, to be motivated by prejudice based on a certain personal characteristic(s). A hate incident is any incident which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, but is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal characteristic(s). The characteristics are disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender. As of May 2017, North Yorkshire Police also include misogyny as part of their hate crime policy.

If you have witnessed, or experienced a hate crime or incident, report it. Citizens Advice has further information about what constitutes a hate crime or incident. Hate crime left unchallenged may lead to further crimes against others. It is also important to report hate crimes so that the police can log incidents and take action, if required.

They provide independent, confidential and accessible reporting and support of victims, witnesses and third parties. Whether you wish to report it to the police or Stop Hate UK, it does not matter if the ‘characteristic’ is real or perceived.

Who can I talk to about my options?

If you would like to talk to somebody about your experience in a confidential and safe space, you could contact the Advice & Support Centre (YUSU). An advisor will be able to give you some information on what your options are, and you can decide whether you wish to take any action. We can also signpost and make referrals to specialist services who would be best-placed to advise you in your situation.
