Hate Crime

According to North Yorkshire Police, hate crime is any criminally chargeable offence which is considered, by the victim, to be motivated by prejudice based on a certain characteristic(s) of a person including disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender.

If you have witnessed, or experienced a hate crime or incident, report it. Citizens Advice has further information about what constitutes a hate crime or incident. Hate crime left unchallenged may lead to further crimes against others. It is also important to report hate crimes so that the police can log incidents and take action, if required.

In an emergency, please contact:

On campus security- 01904 324444

Off campus- 999

If you do not wish to report the crime or incident to the police, you can report it to Stop Hate UK, a leading national organisation that works to challenge all forms of hate crime and discrimination based on any aspect of an individual’s identity. They provide independent, confidential and accessible reporting and support of victims, witnesses and third parties. Whether you wish to report it to the police or Stop Hate UK, it does not matter if the ‘characteristic’ is real or perceived.

If it is not an emergency, you can access any of the support services available to you at the University- Advice and Support Centre (ASC) at YUSU, GSA, Student Hub or your college’s Assistant Head or Administrator- as a first port of call.
