As Student Activities Officer, it’s my job to look after all the fun stuff you can do outside of your university course. At York, there are so many amazing opportunities to follow your interests and get involved - whether that’s through societies, volunteering projects, RAG (Raising and Giving) or media groups. There’s something for everyone, and I support these student groups to be the best they can be so that you can make the most of your time here.
Hey, I’m Mikey and I’m taking a year out of my Biology degree to be your Student Activities Officer. I’m originally from Liverpool (only the slightest accent remains) and did Biology, Chemistry and French at A-level.
During my time at York, I’ve really tried to push myself to try new things. I joined the Pantomime Society (PantSoc) in my first year having never performed in my life (not including my role as ‘Wise Man #2’ in my primary school’s nativity) and joined the committee where I got to be involved in some of the decision making. After producing our biggest show in my second year I then became chair of the society which was challenging but loads of fun. In the same year I also became a team leader for the NightSafe volunteering project; looking after vulnerable (drunk) students at YUSU club nights which gave me the opportunity do something that was useful, enjoyable and hugely rewarding.
I ran for Student Activities Officer because I really believe that student activities are the best things about York! It sounds cheesy but I honestly wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for the opportunities I’ve had outside of my course. I’ve made some of my best friends while doing things I’d never have imagined doing. I want to make sure regardless of who you are or what you’re interested in, there is a place for you here to try new things and generally have the best time of your life!
