Periodic Reviews

The University of York carries out a Periodic Review of each subject once every six years to evaluate the way in which the department responsible assures the quality of its programmes and maintains the standards of the University’s awards. These reviews provide an opportunity for the University and the department to reflect on the quality of its programmes and identify opportunities to further enhance the learning experience of students.

Each Review is typically held over one full day and is carried out by a Panel of internal and external peers comprising of:

  • two academics from York
  • two external academics (from a similar discipline) from another higher education institution
  • a student representative (from either YUSU or the Graduate Students’ Association).

For more information about the Periodic Reviews check out the University’s website. You can also log in using your York email address and look at past reports and action plans.

How are students involved?

Feedback from students is critical to the process and invaluable with respect to informing the Review Panel about students’ actual experiences and learning opportunities.

Student feedback is sought in the following ways:

  1. Student Submission - all students in the department are invited to complete a short questionnaire to provide anonymous feedback on their programme. YUSU collates this information and produces an independent report which is given to the Review Panel prior to the Review day.
  2. Meetings with students - on the Review day groups of students (both undergraduate and postgraduates) are invited to meet with the Panel to share their experiences of studying in the department.

The Review Panel is interested to hear about the good and the not so good parts of studying in the department. It is important that those who participate feel confident that they can speak freely and honestly; be assured that nothing students say will be quoted in the Report which arises from the Periodic Review and nor will students be identified in any way to the department.

Student feedback is an integral part of the Periodic Review process and the more students that get involved the stronger that voice is.
