York PEN is a student branch of English PEN, "the founding centre of a global literary network ... work[ing] to defend and promote free expression, and to remove barriers to literature". At York PEN, we campaign in various forms to protect our right to freedom of speech and for the liberation of writers and poets who have been wrongfully imprisoned because they have chosen to express their right. We host an event every term that brings our work into the public eye in an interactive and creative fashion, raising the profile of particular cases or current freedom of expression issues. Another area of York PEN is advocating translation works, to extend the reach and dissemination of literature.
We welcome anyone with an interest in human rights and freedom of expression, with positions on our committee as: Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Events & Publicity, Campaigns & Social Media and Website Director. Our website has been recognised as one of the best alternative student media outlets. We also have editorial positions for our website, such as PEN news, campaigns, events, Human Rights in York and comments editor.
Our meetings normally consist of a variety of activities, such as debates, campaign plans, letter and postcard writing, event planning and invite guest speakers to speak on particular issues.
Wednesdays, Weekly, 18:30 - 19:30, V/123a
