NightSafe provide immediate support and signposting to vulnerable students on each YUSU club night, as well as various special events throughout the year. NightSafe volunteers work in groups of three and patrol the city centre, working with venue managers, security staff and the emergency services. Each group is made up of one Team Leader and two ordinary volunteers who wear hi-vis uniforms and are equipped with CCTV and a radio for maximum security.
Volunteer recruitment takes place at the end of spring term and training occurs in week 0 of the autumn term, ready for the new academic year. Volunteers will receive training on first aid (either First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work), active listening, conflict management, drug and alcohol awareness, rape and domestic violence, effective communication, and homelessness. There are numerous support systems in place to help volunteers.
We are funded by YuFund.
During Spring term we offer the opportunity for interested volunteers to come "shadow" us on a shift; where you would follow us around as we explain how a shift works. If you are interested please send us an email and keep an eye out on the facebook page.
Recruitment for new volunteers takes place over the Easter holidays with an application form to be sent in and interviews in the summer term.
