Mountaineering (Climbing)

The York University Mountaineering Club is a student run club with a long history of climbing and alpine exploits. Student have been enjoying adventures with the YUMC for over 40 years. We focus predominantly on rock climbing, both indoor and outdoor.

We climb every Wednesday afternoon, alternating between the two indoor climbing walls in York (The Red Goat Climbing Wall and the Energise wall), although you will find members down at both walls every day. We also make regular trips to crags outdoors, where newcomers can be taught in the ways of roped climbing up large crags and also in bouldering, where much smaller boulders (up to about 5 metres) are ascended, with a crash mat used below for safety.

We also run longer trips including a week long European trip at Easter, this year to the Spanish limestone of El Chorro.

There are numerous perks of joining the club, including:
-The right to come on our outdoor trips and socials
-Access to gear discounts, the right to borrow club gear and the ability to buy subsidized equipment.
-The right to come on our specially organised and subsidized courses.
-The ability to compete for the University at competitions
-Cheap entry, equipment and courses at the Energise climbing wall.
