The University and YUSU have agreed that from September 2018 YUSU will take over the operation of University run licensed venues including the premises at Vanbrugh College, Derwent College, Jack Lyons Theatre bar, Central Hall and Greg’s Place.
We believe the agreement will be beneficial for all the major stakeholders on campus and, in particular, will be great news for our students. YUSU President James Durcan said:
‘We are excited to work with our diverse student body to turn these important venues into even more dynamic spaces that can further enhance students’ lives. This move will create more jobs for students with YUSU and we will gradually invest into those premises to make them market-leading venues – further enhancing the space and facilities available to Colleges, societies and sports teams.’
As a result of this YUSU can now make the following commitments:
- Over the next year YUSU will consult with as many students as possible to understand what they want from these on-campus venues so that we can start to make careful investment into them from Summer 2019.
- We will build on our track record of hosting student-led activity making it even easier for students to showcase their ideas and events in YUSU venues.
- We will roll out the ‘Best Bar None’ and ‘Good Night Out’ schemes into all YUSU campus licensed venues.
- We will expand our ‘Green Impact’ sustainability commitments into all current and future YUSU commercial venues by the end of the academic year.
As a result of the change we will be expanding our staff team, creating more student staff positions. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
