Students organised a party for members of its Tea and Coffee club, to mark the group reaching its 30th birthday. Tea and Coffee Club is organised by students for elderly people from across York to get out of the house and have a chat over a hot drink every Tuesday morning since 1986.
Regular member Jean said ‘'I’ve been coming to Tea and Coffee Club since 1992. It used to be on a Wednesday afternoon, but it's on a Tuesday morning now. The best thing about going is that you get to meet lots of other people who are young at heart and actual young people too!" Oldest member Doreen who has attended since the club started said ‘It’s the only time I get out of the house during the week and I enjoy coming so much because everyone is so nice to me.’
As well as getting elderly residents out of the house, students have the opportunity to engage with members of the York community outside the ‘student bubble.’ Session leader third year Philosophy, Politics and Economics student Giovanna Berger said ‘Tea and Coffee club has really made a difference to my university experience and it is so satisfying to give my time to people that really appreciate it’ Giovanna has also been awarded two volunteering awards for her dedication to the club since she joined in her first year at the university.
The students work in coordination with Age UK and two local care homes to get as many elderly York residents as possible along to the group at the university campus. The British Red Cross makes sure the group members, who have an average age of 81, get to and from the group safely. Gladys who has attended for two years said ‘I wish I had started coming sooner, I go to another social club but I have to pay to attend that so it’s nice that this one is free.’
Tea and Coffee club runs every Tuesday at the University of York Heslington West campus between 11am and 12pm.
