Over the past few weeks, both during the elections and afterwards, the comments posted online about candidates have really shocked me. Some of it has been light hearted and in jest, some of it has been deeply personal and targeted. York, we need to learn not to cross that line. We need to learn how to use social media as a platform to extend and amplify debate, not shut it down. We need to learn how to respect each other as individuals, as if speaking face to face. On the 7th of March I am attending an NUS conference that looks at tackling bullying and harassment on social media. This is something I am really passionate about York taking a lead on.
NUS has called for case studies of online abuse. If anyone at York has an experience they would like to share please contact email@example.com with your story.
