Trustee Board

The Trustee Board is the governing body of the University of York Students' Union which has overall responsibility for the management and administration of the organisation. These responsibilities are delegated on a day-to-day basis to the Chief Executive and the staff team. The Board meets around six times per year and records (of unreserved business) from these meetings are available to members. The Board consists of eleven Trustees, five of whom are the elected Full Time Officers of the Union, three are ordinary students elected solely to sit on the Board and the remaining three are non-student professionals chosen for their expertise in certain areas.

I was born in 1946 and educated at Downside School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where I was elected President of the Graduate Common Room (largely on a platform of extended bar hours and cheap beer!)

I am currently Chairman of York Science Park Ltd and Chairman of the University's Business Advisory Committee. Other interests include being Chairman of Alne Parish Council, Club Captain of Alne Tennis Club and Treasurer of a number of local charities. I am married with two daughters.

I'm currently employed as Assistant Director (Policy and Partnerships) at North Yorkshire County Council; previously I was Chief Executive of North Yorkshire Forum for Voluntary Organisations. I've been a trustee of national and local charities, as well as providing professional advice and training to trustee boards. Whilst studying for my first degree I was president of the students union at Westhill College, Birmingham. I am enthusiastic about the role of YUSU as a democratic, participative, student-led organisation and want to use my skills, knowledge and experience to assist YUSU to really deliver for students.

I am an Assistant Director with the City of York Council, responsible for services that support education and social care across the city. I am a qualified teacher and also a member of the chartered institute of public finance and accountancy. In recent years I have managed a local youth football team and have served on school governing bodies and the board of a Housing Association. I enjoy sea kayaking and play the drums badly for a local band. I welcome the opportunity to work with enthusiastic students who want to ensure the best possible university experience for all.

I'm a third-year Politics, Philosophy and Economics student, who has been part of the Trustee Board of YUSU since summer term 2009. I enjoy representing the student's view on managerial and financial matters of the Board, and interacting with sabbs and the external trustee. To have a say as Student Trustee has resulted in me feeling more integrated in the University and its affairs.

I am a third year Accounting, Business Finance and Management student, also occupying roles as Treasurer for Goodricke College JCRC and External Enterprise Director for The York Entrepreneurs Society. I got involved with YUSU and the Trustee Board because I feel strongly about the role of YUSU as part of the lives of students at the University. I wanted to ensure using my own experience, that the students themselves were well represented as part of the governing body of the Union, in a role that carries with a great deal of responsibility but equally a chance to make a real difference in helping YUSU improve the student experience at York for all.

I'm a second year PPE student. Since the beginning of my university life I have involved myself heavily in YUSU societies, clubs and politics, particularly the group that helped drafting the new democratic structure. I was elected student trustee on a platform of ensuring strong student and administrative support of the new democratic structure and its principles and a sound union that sticks to its principles. I feel that my diverse background with involvement in youth politics in Norway and education in both Norway and Swaziland has given me a strong base for doing trustee work for YUSU. However, I do take on this role with the respect and humility it deserves as it is for the students' best that YUSU can make a real difference.
