Union Chair

The Union Chair is a voluntary, part-time role with overall responsibility for the conduct of the Union as a democratic organisation. This includes upholding the constitution and bye-laws, scrutinising the work of officers and ensuring ordinary members are provided with opportunities to make policy.

Main Responsibilities

  • Chair regular meetings of Democracy Committee to steer members’ Ideas to the relevant committee, Assembly or to Referendum;
  • Convene Democracy Committee to rule on appeals to the decision of the Returning Officer during elections or referenda;
  • Ensure that the actions of Officers and Union meetings conform to the regulations set out in the Constitution and Bye-Laws;
  • Chair Referendum debates and the Annual General Meeting, as required;
  • Ensure that the governing documents and policy list of the Union are periodically reviewed and are kept up-to-date.

Manifesto could include ideas for:

  • Widening participation in the Union’s democratic processes
  • Increasing awareness of how the Union works as a democratic organisation
  • Enhancing the accountability of officers to members of the Union
