Security Services

It might sound obvious but make sure you lock your door, even if you are just going down the corridor. Don't leave valuable things on display in your room and make sure that you close you're window when you're out.

If anyone is in on your corridor who you don't know or who is acting suspiciously then phone the Security Centre as an Emergency on (internal telephone) 3333.

If you're locked out go to your porters' lodge, if the porter isn't there then the general Security number 24 hours is (internal telephone) 4444.

Private Houses
If you rent a house or flat, and it is not secure, ask the landlord to make the necessary changes. If you got the house from the University Housing List then your landlord has signed the "Voluntary Code of Practice for Student Accommodation" check out its security requirements. Your house should match these requirements, if it doesn't and you want to complain email AcWelfare@yusu.org and we'll help you out.

Private House Security Tips

  • Try to choose a house with a strong door, good locks on the door and downstairs windows.
  • Try to find a house with a visible burglar alarm and security lighting.
  • Don't leave your keys or spare keys in an obvious place. If you have a deadlock and a latch use both.
  • If there's an alleyway down the side of your house put a gate on it. Burglar's love alleyways they give free access to the back of properties.
  • If you're going away for Easter or Christmas try to take your electrical equipment and valuables with you or arrange secure storage. Mark your valuables with a UV pen you can get one free from the Students' Union. Get insurance. Check the policy details, you may need a lock on your room door as well as on the front door of the house.

Insurance
Take out insurance. The money will be worth it. There are lots of brokers so shop around for a good deal. Students are well catered for by Endsleigh and there's a branch on campus at Market Square.

In the city...

The chances of getting attacked in York are pretty low but according to national statistics students are likely to be victims of street robbery. You can help to protect yourself by being aware of some simple points:

  • At night stay in groups, look after your friends and try to go home with other people.
  • Don't leave your phone or your wallet lying around. If it's out on the table people can take it, or they will know you have valuables with you and they may try to take it later.
  • Note down your IMEI number and your phone number and keep them in a safe place away from your phone. On most phones, the IMEI number (15 digit serial number) will be displayed when you key in *#06#, if not, look behind the phone battery.
  • Get an attack alarm from the Students' Union
  • Use the SU minibus, we accept donations but it is free to use and it will transport you safely to your front door.
  • If you're in a confrontational situation walk away.
  • In the worst scenario if you are attacked shout and scream, set off your personal alarm. You are allowed to use reasonable force such as an umbrella, hairspray or keys to defend yourself (you can't carry a weapon such as a knife).

Computer Rooms

Most computer rooms now have panic alarms in them. If you are working late at night make sure you are aware of where they are located, and know how to use them.

Security Provisions

YUSU Welfare, in association with the University Security Team offer students free security provisions. We give out security packs including a personal attack alarm, a UV marker pen, security information, and a late night minibus timetable. If you require any of these, email AcWelfare@yusu.org.
