Sexual Health

Sex should be enjoyable and sexually transmitted infections certainly aren’t. They can be very painful and impede your fertility. The best way to protect against STIs is by wearing a condom.

Whatever kind of sex you’re having, you usually need more lubricant than the amount already on the condom. This can make sex more comfortable and help to prevent the condom breaking.

Free condoms (including latex free, extra strong and flavoured!) and lube are available from Grace, the Academic and Welfare officer (we can discreetly send you some through internal mail if you prefer), YUSU reception, college welfare reps and Nightline.

If you have had sex without a condom you should go and get tested:

GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) Clinic and Family Planning Clinic
31 Monkgate, York, YO31 7WA
Distance: 2.33 km (1.45 miles) from campus
Family Planning Clinic: 01904 630352
GUM Clinic: 01904 725 412

This clinic is ace but sexual health services across the UK need improving - please sign our sexual health petition by clicking the link on the left. Cheers!

90% of all Sexually Transmitted Infections can be cured so it’s well worth getting tested. The GUM clinic offers free and completely confidential STI tests – it doesn’t go on your medical records and you don’t even need to give them your real name if you want.

One of the most common STIs is chlamydia - 1 in 10 young people have it. There are often no symptoms, but if left untreated chlamydia can lead to infertility. Monkgate Clinic and YUSU run regular chlamydia screening on campus – look out for posters. Or, if you want to take the test in your own time, we're running a 'take-away' service trial throughout October. You can pick up a chlamydia testing kit from YUSU (visit Grace in the YUSU office, or email the address above to have one sent to you through internal mail), follow the instructions in the comfort of your own home, and then drop the test off in the test bin in the campus Health Centre. You can receive your results by 'phone call or text. Do it! It is easy and painless and can save you a whole world of hassle later on.
