York Students In Schools (YSIS)
Back to school
York Students In Schools (YSIS) places volunteers in local schools. They help with a variety of activities; lessons in the classroom, sports, drama, music, one-to-one mentoring and paired reading. Foreign linguists can be placed to help pupils whose first language is not English.
There are three programmes within YSIS; the Student Tutoring Programme, the Student Mentoring Programme and the Out of hours Learning Programme. Here’s a brief introduction to each one…
Student Tutoring Programme
Most of our volunteers are placed as student tutors. A tutor works alongside the teacher in the classroom (laboratory, gym, sports field). Pupils benefit because they spend less time waiting for someone to answer their question. Teachers can spend more time addressing particular needs. You can specify which age group and which subjects you would like to help with. Tutors generally visit their schools for around half a day a week for 10 weeks or more.
Student Mentoring Programme
Mentors work with children on a one-to-one basis. Mentors and mentees are matched up according to interests and personal preferences. A mentor is not a teacher or a personal tutor; he or she offers advice and acts as a role model. For instance, you might help the mentee to organise his or her homework, or talk about what it’s like to go to university.
Mentoring placements often last much longer than tutoring ones, but you might have contact less frequently, for example once a fortnight. You will normally be required to have completed a tutoring placement before becoming a mentor.
Out of hours Learning Programme
There are opportunities to help with activities that take place after school. You might conduct an orchestra, coach a football team or teach website design. You may be able to run a series of workshops on a hobby of yours. If you’ve got a hobby that you’re fanatical about, and you think you can make it accessible to children, get in touch.
