How do I get involved?

The groups you'll be working with are often vulnerable, so before you start volunteering there's a few bits and pieces to take care of! Follow these easy steps and you'll be ready to volunteer in no time!

  1. Download the Volunteer Information Form and print out a hard copy. Fill it in and bring it into the SU centre in Goodricke College, next to the Roger Kirk centre.
  2. If you are working with children, or vulnerable people you will also need to be police checked; so follow the instructions on the CRB page. If you have already been CRB checked in the past, we need a photocopy of your form.
  3. Once we have all your details, references will take around a week to process and then you can start the project.
  4. Volunteer Forms can be left on the tray on the Volunteer Coordinators desk in the SU. To be able to fill in your CRB form, you need to come in with the required ID (as listed on the CRB website) to the SU Centre. Maria is in the SU on Tuesday, Thursday 9-4.00pm, or Fridays 9.00-3.00pm.
  5. Once all the forms have been processed, you will receive an e-mail letting you know you are free to start volunteering in whichever project you so choose. Maria will E-mail the co-ordinator(s) to find out when and where the next session is and Voila!!! You’re off

The time you can give to volunteering can also gain you a nationally recognised award through Millennium Volunteers. They are based at the University and provide a personal development programme to allow you to maximise your volunteering experience. Once you sign up to the (FREE) programme you get termly reviews which aim to which help you think about the impact your volunteering is having. Certificates are received for 50, 100 and 200 hours of volunteering which are nationally recognised and make any CV look nice and full!

You can use any of your volunteering with Student Action and other agencies to count towards this. If you are interested, contact Joey in the SU or go and see Millennium Volunteers in the Careers Service - email milvol@york.ac.uk.

It is very important that you read the Volunteer Guide and use it to refer to through out your time volunteering. If you have any problems or questions at any point, please let your project co-ordinator know, or talk to Maria volco@yusu.org or Joey the Student Development Officer sdc@yusu.org in the SU.

Phone: 01904 434799 or 433133, email or pop into the office and see them.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
