Week One   9-16 August  08                Week Two    23-30 August 08

KIDS CAMP is run during the Easter & Summer holidays, it has been running for over 40 years. This week long project gives local children from York, Selby and Leeds, who are in desperate need of a break the chance to have a holiday. The children are aged between 8 and 11 and come from all different backgrounds, some from Local Education Authorities, some from One Parent Families Association, and some from the Young Carers Association. This holiday gives the children the chance to be children, to have fun, to learn new social skills mixing with other people and to get opportunities that they wouldn't normally have. This is an amazing opportunity for these children, and it can't happen without the volunteers support.

The week is completely free for the volunteers, all food and accommodation is provided, as is entry to all the activities. Activities that we undertake can be anything from visiting the cinema, meeting a bird of prey at the Falconry, to paddling in the sea. It is without doubt one of the most rewarding ways you can spend a week whilst at university, and will often have volunteers returning year after year. We recruit volunteers in Spring and Summer term.

KIDS CLUB runs every Saturday of term. We take a group of children from disadvantaged backgrounds out for the day to enjoy various different activities - anything from bowling to trips to the beach! All the children are aged between 8 and 11, and have been classed by social workers as desperately in need of a break. The kids really benefit from these weekly activities giving them the chance to make new friends and have fun in a safe environment, as well as giving parents and carers a break.

KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) is a weekly run sports/activity session for children with disabilities, where volunteers are paired up with a child and get to participate in activities such as trampolining and dancing with the kids amongst other great activities! Its great fun and the children really love it.

" Although scary as hell to begin with, KEEN is definetly the best thing to do on a Sunday. Especially if you're hungover!" Ben, Volunteer

Held on Sundays in the Sports Centre 1-2. Just tern up and get involved or
E-mail Depack at keen@yusu.org for more info.

MEG (Music Education Group) runs music workshops for schools, and despite being based in the Music Department, it is not just music students who get involved in it. You need very little musical experience to start, with some of the workshops including a Kazoo workshop, which as long as you can keep a beat, sing "She'll be coming round the mountain…" and enthuse kids, you won't be out of your depth. For those with more musical experience, there are other workshops that require more musical knowledge, so there really is something for everyone. They also run massive one day workshops throughout the year, with over 200 local school children coming onto campus, and participating in a concert! Last year we ran One Night on Broadway a huge concert showcasing the children's talents and volunteers not only watched on proudly at the work they had done, but also help make sure the event ran smoothly!

E-mail meg@yusu.org for more info.

Theatre in Schools Volunteers go in to schools and set up drama activites and productions with school children. Experience with children is useful but not essential. Lots of enthusiasum and abiltiy to work as a team is all you need.

Help on running the day and the organisation up to the event will be of great help from anyone intersted in providing assistance.Lauren will be able to help with any further information.
