Hitches

RAG Hitches offer you the opportunity to leave the lakes and the ducks and visit some beautiful cities with little effect on both your wallet and the environment!

Don’t be deterred by the myths, we teach you how to hitch safely, and if you are sensible then no harm will come! All you need is a partner, a big black marker pen, and a drop of optimism and you’ll soon find yourself smug as someone who hasn’t forked out for the train in one of our fine destinations. Current hitches run to Edinburgh, Dublin and Paris with plans in the pipeline for a countryside hitch to the Lake District.

York is one of only two universities that still grant students the freedom to hitchhike so don’t miss out on this experience! Most hitches leave on a Thursday evening and return late on Sunday. They cost between £80 and £150 and include full RAG support, ferry costs, return transport and of course, a donation to RAG charities.

Jailbreak

A Jailbreak involves teams being released from a start point and given 58 hours to get as far away as possible and back to a designated finish point. Teams may use any form of transport to move around but the overriding principle is that they are not to pay for transportation but to use their powers of persuasion!

The team that returns in time and can present convincing evidence that they have travelled the furthest distance (photos/dates newspapers/souvenirs etc.) will win a prize!

RAG raises money for charity by charging a small sponsorship fee to get involved but in return we give teams safety briefings, provide them with a small survival pack and set up an HQ to keep track of where they are and what they are up to!

Abseiling

Every year RAG offers you the opportunity to put that vertigo behind you and abseil off the universities very own Central Hall. The sponsorship fee is only around £15 and a fully qualified instructor will be there to show you exactly what to do!

Fire-Walking

Firewalking refers to the activity of walking on hot coals, rocks or cinders without burning the soles of one’s feet’…..Cool hey!? And RAG gives you the opportunity to do it!

Skydiving

Every year RAG offers you the opportunity to throw yourself out of a plane at 15,000ft (give or take a few inches!) Whether driven by ambitions to soar like an eagle or beer induced bravery, RAG skydiving is unbelievably popular and is the cheapest jump on the market.

Skydiving usually costs around £250-350 including full training and a donation to RAG charities. RAG will be around to assist with raising the funds!
