Projects in the community

Minds in Motion

Minds in Motion (MIM) is a community group set up to help support people with dementia and their carers. Though initially set up by students from the Hull York Medical School (HYMS), volunteers are now from a wide variety of disciplines and anyone is welcome to join. MIM is a multi-award winning group; having won the Higher Education Volunteering Award (December 2008), Higher York Award (May 2009) and York Community Pride Award (October 2009).

Volunteers work in different teams to put on activities for people with dementia at local community units for the elderly. At present there are six activities: arts & crafts, singing, dance & movement, interactive music, reminiscence, and gardening & restoration. Each session normally lasts about an hour, and each activity is on about twice a month. Sessions are normally held on wednesday afternoons and weekends. Once a month, MIM runs a Harmony Café for people with dementia and their carers, where they can chat to each other, as well as enjoy live music, a free buffet and raffle.
