Union General Meeting (24th Oct 2006)

NON-SMOKING EVENTS

Proposed by: Thomas Moore

Seconded by: Benjamin Griffiths, Amy Foxton and Rich Croker

This union notes:

(i) Smoking and passive smoking has been scientifically linked to premature death, heart disease and many types of cancer.
(ii) The large number of non-smoking students
(iii) The negative externalities of smoking including
- coughing
- headache
- eye irritation
- sore throat
- sneezing and runny nose
- feeling sick
- breathing problems (and possibly an asthma attack)
- the effects of second hand smoke on unborn babies

This union further notes:

(i) The changes in legislation, coming into effect summer 2007, banning smoking in all public spaces including bars and workplaces
(ii) That bar staff shouldn’t be put in a situation where they can be harmed from second hand smoke.
(iii) The large number of volunteer students running and working at campus events.

This union believes:

(i) All YUSU Ents Committee co-ordinated events should be made non-smoking as a rule.
(ii) That all events should be publicised as such.

This union resolves:

(i) To mandate the Services & Finance Officer and the Ents Officers to take this matter to Ents Committee and ask for the Union Code to be updated to make all YUSU co-ordinated events non-smoking.
