Union General Meeting (24th Oct 2006)
DECREASED COOKING FACILITIES

This union notes:
(i) The decreased cooking facilities in Derwent (Blocks A-D), Langwith (Block A), Goodricke (Block B) and Vanbrugh (Blocks A and B) that resulted due to the changes in fire regulations this year.
(ii) That some students are experiencing financial difficulties because of the reduced catering facilities.
(iii) That some students are eating unhealthily because of the reduced cooking facilities.
(iv) That some students, including returning students, were not informed of the changes before they arrived at University.
(v) That some students have dietary requirements that are not conducive to living with the reduced facilities.
This union further notes:
(i) That eating unhealthily can lead to a detrimental performance in academic life.
(ii) That eating unhealthily can lead to students not participating fully in the extra-curricular life available at University.
(iii) Working part time, which students may be increasingly forced to do, can have a negative effect on a students’ academic progress.
(iv) That some students were informed by University handbooks that their kitchens would have more catering facilities than they were provided with.
This union resolves:
(i) To mandate the President, Academic & Welfare Officer and Policy & Campaigns Officers to write to the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Students, Student Support Services Manager and Academic Registrar expressing their concern.
(ii) Mandate the President to lobby the University until a satisfactory solution has been achieved for those students living in the fore mentioned blocks and for those who were misled or uninformed by the University on the changes.
This union further resolves:
(i) Mandate the Policy & Campaigns Officers to wok with the President and Academic & Welfare Officer to campaign against the University if a satisfactory solution is not met.
