Union General Meeting (21st Feb 2006)
Emergency Motion - AUT Strike
Proposed by: Nat Thwaites-McGowan
Seconded by: Tim Bradbury
This union notes:
(i) That the recent Association of University Teachers (AUT) ballot was in favour of industrial action
(ii) The AUT’s request to be supported by the Students’ Union in its action
(iii) The support given to the AUT by the NUS
(iv) The support given to the NUS by the AUT in the fight for Free Fair and Funded Education
This union believes:
(i) That the proposed action will be detrimental to the students of the University of York
(ii) That the action the AUT takes may lead to students not being able to graduate immediately
(iii) That University teaching staff are under funded
(iv) That unions’ strengths are in collective activism.
This union further believes:
(i) That the under funding of teaching staff at this University could also have a detrimental effect on the standard to which our students are educated
(ii) That, as a result, either taking no action, or taking strike action will result in an optimal situation for our membership.
This union resolves:
(i) To support the AUT in its campaign for better increases in funding unless that action is detrimental to any students at the University
(ii) To mandate the President to write to the Vice-Chancellor and the head of the AUT supporting the need for a quick resolution to these arguments.
This union further resolves:
(i) To actively campaign against any decision by the AUT to implement industrial action that could result in a detrimental effect on our members’ education.
