Union General Meeting (31st Jan 2006)

Halifax College Non-Alcoholic Social Space

Proposed by: James Flinders

Seconded by: Becky Tichband

This union notes:

1. Halifax College currently has 1800 students.
2. The capacity of JJ’s bar is 200.
3. Every other College has a non-alcoholic social space.
4. These social spaces are accessible 24 hours a day.
5. Many Halifax College students are excluded from College life because they do not drink alcohol and feel uncomfortable in alcohol-serving areas.

This union believes:

1. Halifax College should continue to have a bar, as well as a non-alcoholic social space which is accessible 24 hours a day.
2. A College bar is not a substitute for a non-alcoholic social space.
3. A non-alcoholic social space is vitally important for all students, especially those who, for religious or cultural reasons, feel uncomfortable in alcohol serving areas.

This union resolves:

1. To support the Halifax College Students’ Association in its campaign for a non-alcoholic social space in Halifax College.
2. To mandate the President, Services Officer and Campaigns Officer to actively campaign for a non-alcoholic social space in Halifax College.
