Union General Meeting (6th Nov 2008)

Save B Henrys And Retain Bar Provision On Campus

Proposed by: Erik O’Connor

Seconded by: Matt Burton, Rory Shanks and Ed Durkin

This union notes:

(i) The announcement made by the Head of Hospitality, Phil Kember, that B Henry’s, the Alcuin College Bar, is to abandon its evening operations, and cease to be a licensed area in the Spring Term of 2009;
(ii) The motion ‘Proposed Restricted Opening Hours of Campus Bars’
(iii) The work by generations of JCRC and Union Officers to promote College Bars as social venues;
(iv) The position of B Henry’s as one of few social venues in Alcuin College;
(v) The lack of consultation by Commercial Services with Alcuin College and this Union on this topic.

This union believes:

(i) That B Henry’s should remain a licensed outlet in the future.
(ii) That the provision of a bar in each College is integral to the College System, and that its existence should not solely depend on whether it is profitable;
(iii) That the University should carefully consult with students on the issue of licensed social venues.

This union resolves:

(i) To work for and campaign for continued provision of a licensed outlet in Alcuin College;
(ii) To action the Services and Finance Officer, Societies and Communications Officer, and the President to lobby the University for continued bar provision in Alcuin College;
(iii) To support and promote proposed ‘Plan B’ options to the University rather than closing B Henrys.
