Union General Meeting (12th Jun 2008)
Emergency Motion - Campaign for a 1st October 2008 opening of the Langwith Cafe Bar Development
Proposed by: Zach Pepper
Seconded by: Matt Burton, Anne-Marie Canning, Joey Ellis, Jo Carter, Chris O'Brien, Mary Mason, Ali Jackson, Tom Bradshaw, Oliver Lester, Joe Clarke, David Sharp, Tom Scott and Rory Shanks
This union notes:
(i) The current policy “YUSU Should Take Over Langwith Bar And Open The First Students' Union Bar On Campus”
(ii) The University has agreed to allow YUSU to redevelop the site in Langwith, ready for 1st January 2009
(iii) That due to the age of the building, asbestos is contained and will need to be removed from the café bar area before work to redevelop the space can take place
(iv) That only University approved and managed contractors may remove asbestos
This union believes:
(i) That opening in October 2008 will benefit colleges and students who arrive at the start of term in 2008, improving student satisfaction and providing a better student experience
(ii) That the Langwith Café Bar project should be made a high priority project and should be fully supported to take place during the summer months of 2008
(iii) That the proposed Langwith Café Bar project is a very realistic project to be undertaken during the summer months of 2008
(iv) That the Langwith Café Bar project will be central to the welcome week activities taking place in Langwith College
This union resolves:
(i) To mandate all Union Officers to actively campaign and lobby the University and Vice-Chancellor to allow the project to run and open by 1st October 2008
(ii) To mandate the President and Services and Finance Officer to speak to the Vice-Chancellor with regards to the proposal with haste
(iii) To support Langwith College in their campaign to support an October 2008 opening
