Union General Meeting (15th May 2008)
Volunteering and Charitable Work at York
Proposed by: Joey Ellis
Seconded by: Matt Burton
This union notes:
(i) That over 1500 students are involved in volunteering and charitable work at the University of York through Student Action, RAG and various societies.
(ii) The record turnout and money raised at RAG parade 2008.
(iii) The recruitment of a volunteer co-ordinator in April 2008 to help further the volunteering function of the Student Union.
(iv) The amount of time spent securing fundraising that could be spent on developing volunteering.
This union believes:
(i) That being involved in the local community through volunteering and charity work enhances the student experience.
(ii) That involvement in charitable and voluntary work plays a key part in the development of students during their time at University and equips them with transferable skills for their future.
(iii) That the expansion of the University campus, thus increasing numbers, should see investment in new projects and interaction with the local community.
This union resolves:
(i) To continue to support and promote the development of our existing projects and new volunteering and charitable opportunities.
(ii) To make Student Action a permanent local beneficiary of RAG, thus developing the link between the volunteering and charitable sectors of the union and enabling students to continue the work they do in the local community.
(iii) To mandate the Student Development & Charities Officer to create more communication between the various charitable and voluntary groups on campus to work together rather than compete with each other.
(iv) To mandate the Student Development & Charities Officer to create a total at the end of each year of all money raised by student groups and societies.
