Proposed by: Anne-Marie Canning

Seconded by: Matt Burton, Joey Ellis, Joanne Carter, Colin Hindson, Tom Langrish, Matthew Pallas, Aimee Gamble and Kate Evans

This union notes:

(i) The recent closure of the Goodricke-Vanbrugh bridge and the Langwith-Alcuin bridge
(ii) That both bridges have been closed upon advice of a University consultant
(iii) That the University plans to demolish the Langwith-Alcuin bridge
(iv) That repairing the Goodricke-Vanbrugh bridge may take up to 18 months.
(v) The poor state of some pathways around campus
(vi) The condition of the surface on the Physics-Central Hall bridge
(vii) The time taken to walk from campus North to south has increased

This union believes:

(i) That maintenance of the bridges is important.
(ii) That the bridges on campus form a crucial part of the campus walkways
(iii) That the Goodricke-Vanbrugh bridge should be repaired or replaced without haste.
(iv) That the additional wear and tear on paths around campus is causing them to be un fit for purpose.
(v) That the paths around campus should be improved to cater for the increased traffic walking on them.

This union resolves:

(i) To mandate the President to lobby the University to repair or replace the Goodricke-Vanbrugh bridge as soon as possible
(ii) To mandate the President to lobby the University to improve the paths around campus as soon as possible.
(iii) To mandate the President to lobby the University to improve the surface of the remaining bridges around campus.
(iv) To mandate the President to lobby the University to regularly maintain the existing bridges on campus.
(v) To mandate the President to work with the Langwith and Alcuin JCRC Chairs, to lobby the University to re-examine the demolition of the Langwith-Alcuin bridge.
