Union General Meeting (28th Feb 2008)
Reducing The Cost Of A Year In Industry
Proposed by: Karen Coulton
Seconded by: Jason Rose
This union notes:
(i) That fees for a year in industry were under £700 prior to 2007.
(ii) Increased fees have raised the costs to over £1,500.
This union believes:
(i) An increase in fees is more likely to discourage people from taking the opportunity of a year in industry.
(ii) A lower uptake in year placements would be detrimental to the University’s image and could discourage some students from applying here.
(iii) That the level of support was justified with an approx £600 fee but not a £1500 fee.
This union resolves:
(i) To mandate the Academic and Welfare Officer to campaign for lower costs for the year placements scheme.
(ii) To investigate the level of support offered by each department who have placement years as part of their degree structures.
