Union General Meeting (31st Jan 2008)
DON’T PRICE STUDENTS OUT OF COLLEGES!
Proposed by: Matt Burton
Seconded by: Joe Clarke, Zach Pepper, Tom Langley, Tom Langrish, Colin Hindson, Tom Flynn and Matthew Pallas
This union notes:
(i) The Heslington East Development.
(ii) The collegiate system.
(iii) The creation of a new Goodricke college on Heslington East.
(iv) The suggestion of higher rents being charged on Heslington East.
(v) The suggestion that en-suite and standard should be charged at the same rent.
This union believes:
(i) That rents should be affordable for students.
(ii) That all types of accommodation should be of a high quality and well maintained.
(iii) That rents should be charged on the basis of types of accommodation.
(iv) That differentiation of rents on the basis of age of accommodation will result in students becoming segregated on the basis of ability to pay.
(v) If the University is committed to fair access and opportunity it must maintain only two rent streams: standard or ensuite.
(vi) That the length of lets are a crucial factor of affordability of accommodation.
(vii) That a variety of let lengths is crucial to diversity within colleges.
(viii) That variety is the spice of college life.
This union resolves:
(i) To mandate the President to lobby the University to maintain the current let system whereby there are only two rent streams: standard or ensuite.
(ii) To mandate the President to lobby to maintain a variety of let lengths including 33 week, 38 week, 40+ week, 51 week.
(iii) To mandate YUSU to continue to support Goodricke College in creating the college they need and want.
(iv) To mandate the President to maintain pressure on the University to continue their rolling refurbishment programme of accommodation.
