Union General Meeting (31st Jan 2008)
MARKETING - PROMOTION OF DISCRIMINATION
Proposed by: Sophie Harrison
Seconded by: Mary Finnegan and Adam Wollman
This union notes:
(i) The YUSU Constitution: Article 6.1 – Equal Opportunities Policy – the Union pursues its aims and objectives with positive inclusion of the diverse needs of all students at its heart. This will include not only a firm commitment not to discriminate against a student or group of students on any grounds (including age, gender, race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, class, unrelated criminal conviction or medical condition)’ but also a commitment to embrace that difference and celebrate that diversity.
(ii) Appendix 2.1 – Freedom of Expression.
This union believes:
(i) All students have a right to freedom of expression within the law and within the YUSU Constitution.
(ii) However this freedom must co-exist with the Equal Opportunities Policy.
(iii) The YUSU Constitution’s Equal Opportunities Policy, Article 6.1 ‘a firm commitment not to discriminate against a student or group of students on any grounds’ and that the promotion of any publicity of material which could discriminate or offend any Union member goes against these constitutional principles.
(iv) That the alienation of or discrimination against any of its members is wrong and should actively be avoided.
This union resolves:
(i) Not to advertise any promotions that make use of, or advertise discriminatory material, following the procedures set out in YUSU’s Contentious Marketing Policy (the Draft YUSU Marketing Policy can be viewed online at http://www.yusu.org/uploads/democracy/marketingpolicy.pdf )
