Union General Meeting (31st Jan 2008)

YUSU VOTING SHOULD NOT BE LINKED TO NUS MEMBERSHIP

Proposed by: James Blackshaw

Seconded by: M J Burton and Matthew Pallas.

This union notes:

(i) The Union’s Constitution section concerning postal votes: “5.24: If a paper ballot is undertaken, ordinary members may vote using a postal vote. Those wishing to vote by post must apply to the Returning Officer, in writing, quoting their NUS Card number by 12 noon 5 working term days before the election.”
(ii) That casting of a postal vote would require possession of an NUS Extra or Democracy Card.
(iii) That this Union is responsible for its own elections, and is not subordinate to any other organisation in this regard.

This union believes:

(i) That voting in this Union’s elections should never require membership of an outside body.
(ii) That the current Constitution does not adhere to this principle.

This union resolves:

(i) To revoke all previous version of the Constitution.
(ii) To approve a new Constitution identical to the last version except for the following amendment: “5.24: If a paper ballot is undertaken, ordinary members may vote using a postal vote. Those wishing to vote by post must apply to the Returning Officer, in writing , quoting their York student ID number by 12 noon 5 working term days before the election.”
