The VC's Teaching Awards

Has someone particularly inspired you and your colleagues in your learning?

Has someone helped you engage with a difficult topic, or given you valuable help with study skills?

If you have encountered an exceptional teacher here at York, you can help ensure that their talents and hard work are recognised by nominating them for a teaching award. The awards are presented annually at the summer graduation ceremonies, in order to recognise outstanding teaching and learning support before students and their families.

You can nominate both lecturers (including postgraduates who teach and demonstrate) and members of learning support staff (eg from the Library/Careers Service/Maths Support Service/CELT and writing support teams).

All electronic nominations must be in by Friday 3 February 2012 (end of week 4).

Please fill in the details of your chosen nominee/s and then under "Reasons for Nominating" please write a short paragraph outlining your reasons for suggesting this person/these people for nomination. You might want to consider the following four prompts:

  • In what way(s) is/are the nominee(s) good at explaining things and promoting ‘sound learning’?
  • How do they make the subject interesting and convey their enthusiasm? (eg through innovative approaches/imaginative use of resources/etc). Do they do this in relation to a particularly difficult or unpopular subject?
  • Have they increased your engagement with the subject matter beyond the classroom? How do they stimulate you intellectually and encourage critical thought?
  • How useful is the feedback they give on your work?

Please note that excellence in supervisory responsibilities is recognised through a separate scheme, the YUSU ‘Supervisor of the Year’ competition, which will run later in the year.

Your comments will be passed on to your Department. Each department is then invited to put forward up to three candidates, bearing their students’ views in mind. Alternatively, your Department may be seeking nominations internally, in which case you can use this route instead.
