Vehicle Hire
Vehicles are available to hire for all Students’ Union clubs and societies and (subject to one or two legal conditions) we can also train you to drive them. (All drivers must have passed a driver assessment.) The Students’ Union operates two minibuses, one 9 seater people carrier (a Mercedes Vito) and a 7 seater car, so we can usually cater for your requirements.
Payment for this service is internally charged to clubs and societies.
How To Make A Booking
If you wish to make a booking on behalf of a society please contact Fiona in the Student Centre on 4660 or by email to secretary@yusu.org

Driver Assessments
We run minibus driver assessments/training (Minibus Awareness Session) in the Autumn and Spring terms - you need to sign up with Fiona, in in the SU General Office, during Week 3. You will need both part of your driving licence with you when you sign up.
To be eligible to take part in the Minibus Awareness Session you must be 21+ and have held a full, clean UK driving licence for at least two years.
The Minibus Assessment is in two parts:
Saturday Morning (9.30am-1.30pm): this comprises of a theory test on the highway code and information being given relating to minibus driving. The session then goes outside which is a 'practical' session where you will carry out minibus safety checks and get to do parking and braking exercises in a minibus (although this is off road you must still be insured). The whole of the Saturday morning is assessed by the driving instructors. As long as you receive a satisfactory score you will then go forward for an on-road assessment.
On-Road Assessment: This one hour assessment is arranged for a mutually convenient time for you, the driving instructor and, of course, vehicle availability. The first half-an-hour is carried out in the style of a driving lesson, the second half is carried out in the style of a driving test. The on-road assessment is a pass or fail. If you pass you are then eligible to drive the Union's minibuses. Your details will then go on to a list of registered minibus drivers so that clubs and societies can contact you to drive for them. If you fail the on-road assessment you can (subject to the driving instructor's initial assessment), if you wish, have one more attempt at the on-road assessment, which you or your club/society will need to cover the cost of. If you fail again you will not be able to take the test again.
People Carrier Assessment: This is, usually, a one-hour session on a one-to-one basis with the driving instructor covering vehicle checks and of course your driving ability. If you pass you are then eligible to drive the appropriate vehicle. To be eligible to drive the 9 seater people carrier you must be 21+ and have held a full, clean UK driving licence for at least two years; to be eligible to drive the 7 seater people carrier you must be 20+ and have held a full, clean UK driving licence for at least two years. If you fail the on-road assessment you can (subject to the driving instructor's initial assessment), if you wish, have one more attempt at the on-road assessment, which you or your club/society will need to cover the cost of. If you fail again you will not be able to take the test again.
If you have any questions about any of the above, or you would like further details on these services please contact Fiona in the Student Centre on 4660 or by email to secretary@yusu.org
