Windsurfing @ York

Hi ... and welcome to the the windsurfing arm of the metaphorical octopus that is YUSWC!

Here is a man going REALLY fast

Sweet!

So what do we do?

We windsurf, dude! When? Most Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays/Sundays during Autumn, Spring and Summer... we tend to take December and January off to avoid the ice and polar bears.

These days are open to literally *all* abilities and are great fun:

  • If you've never windsurfed before, then why not try something new one weekend this term? Tuition, equipment, wetsuits, and sometimes lunch are all provided at a *tiny* fraction of the cost of private lessons... AND it's mint
  • If you're a seasoned pro, then come along and show off your carve gybes, loops and heli-tacks; which would be sweet.
  • And if you're anywhere in between then just come along and get powered up!

We usually windsurf at Beaver Reservoir, which is about a 40 minute drive from Campus (45 mins if you count the obligatory Browns sandwich run). Chances are the sailors will be going too, so we all travel over in convoy for our day of water-based action and adventure. Check out the beginners' days page for more info on these trips.

Sometimes it just is windy and we have to get out there. These 'last minute' trips when the wind is blowing are word-of-mouth jobbies, dependent on cars and access being available at the vital moments... these can be the most exciting days EVER and are not to be missed.

Also we go to amazing SWA (Student Windsurfing Association) events throughout the year which are always awesome weekends... check out some of the pictures in the "Events" section. These events cater for literally *all* abilities and are probably one of the best places to learn windsurfing; and you get a *massive* party on the Saturday evening too. Check out the Events pages for more info...

Finally, we organise loads of socials throughout the year which always go down a treat, especially after a good day on the water. Club socials with the sailors (look out for us in Ziggys - we'll be the only people suitably dressed for the environment i.e. rashvests, boardshorts and wetsuits); and also we go out with the Surf club, and Leeds and Nottingham windsurfers too...

We are a very friendly club; always looking for new members, particularly beginners, and more advanced windsurfers are of course welcome too. Kite-surfers are a rare breed but we'd love to hear from you... and of course there is always that moment in a sailor's life when they have the epiphanous realisation that "that windsurfing lark could actually be quite the jolly" ...

Drop us an email at sailing@yusu.org; join the mailing list here, or if you're interested in one particular aspect of the club then you can email the responsible officer directly - check out the committee page for all the deets.

xxx See you on the water! xxx
