Making the Lives of York Students Better

NUS campaigns tirelessly to ensure a better deal for students. The changes NUS help bring around nationally are changes which impact on the lives of York students. Here a few of the many examples:

- Over the summer HSBC were planning on charging graduates interest on their overdrafts. Thanks to an NUS-led campaign in the media, on Facebook and in meetings with the bank, HSBC scrapped their plans.

- The government was reviewing student exemption from council tax. After extensive lobbying from the NUS, the government decided to maintain the current exemption for students.

- Until recently, students had no independent body to go to if they felt their work was being marked unfairly by universities. Thanks to the NUS, the government has set up an Office of the Independent Adjudicator for you to go to with any complaints.

NUS DOES make a difference. Government ministers admit it. Vice-Chancellors admit it and so do student' unions.

If YUSU leaves the NUS and other unions follow, the strength of NUS will diminish. If NUS' strength diminishes so does its ability to campaign for change.
