NUS, Money and YOU!
Here are some facts about how much NUS costs you, how much it costs YUSU and how much we get back from NUS.
- NUS affiliation fee costs YUSU £36,000 a year. This money comes directly out of the block grant donated by the University. The affiliation fee works out at around 5% of our grant.
- YUSU members (which you are!) pay exactly £0.00 towards the cost of the affiliation fee. If we all had to pay it would only work out at £3 a year for each student. Considering the cost of joining most YUSU societies is £4, I consider that good value for money!
- YUSU received £16,000 last year from the NUS. This is the case as for every NUS EXTRA card sold in the University, YUSU received over £4. This money goes back in to YOUR union. The NUS only received £2.50 as they have to produce and market the cards.
- YOUR:SHOP is stocked by a company available exclusively to NUS members. If we had used the same company, TUCO, which the University uses, it would have cost £10,000 more to stock.
If you take away the £16,000 income from NUS Extra & the £10,000 saved buying through the NUS, affiliation costs YUSU £10,000 a year. Please read more to find out why affiliation is worth the cost.
