No to NUS Affiliation
•Membership of NUS costs York students £53,000 per year. That comes from the £36,000 direct payment and £17,000 that YOU pay in NUS Extra fees.•You do not get to vote for your NUS officers. YUSU is only able to send delegates to vote. These delegates vote however they like and are selected by a low-key vote, typically winning with under 50 votes: 0.3% of students here.
•Delegates can vote however they like at conference on motions: even contradicting democratic UGM votes here in York. For example, many student unions opposed the AUT strike, but the unaccountable, undemocratic NUS officers overruled them and declared the student body supportive of the strike.
•NUS Services Limited is not the only body that can negotiate discounts for student union shops. Many disaffiliated unions use companies such as Northern Services Limited to give us a similar saving.
•Most of the £10 you pay for your NUS Extra card goes to the NUS. The discounts you get from them are usually offered to all students, not just NUS members.
•YUSU has to pay for some training it gets from the NUS, adding more to NUS coffers and away from the services that matter to you.
•This year NUS is forecast to be in £1,120,503 of debt. Why should York students have to pay for the financial mismanagement of NUS.
If you support an unaccountable, weak NUS, working for careerist student politicians then vote yes. If you believe in democracy, if you believe in more money for student societies and minority and liberation groups, if you believe that you shouldn’t have to pay £10 for discounts you can receive anyway, vote NO.
