Some facts regarding the NUS and the affiliation
NUS is a confederate association of around 650 students\' unions, comprising of over 5 million students.
Around 95% of all students\' unions throughout the country are affiliated to NUS.
Some Unions, including Southampton have chosen to dissaffiliate in recent years, however some Unions have also (re)-joined the NUS too.
NUS policy is discussed and agreed democratically at NUS conferences, attended by members elected by students\' unions.
The University of York Students\' Union currently pays £36,000 per annum as an affiliation fee to NUS (currently about 5% of the Block Grant received from the University of York per annum).
The University of York Students\' Union currently sells approximately 4,000 NUS Extra cards that students and associates of the University of York pay £10 for.
The University of York Students\' Union receives approximately £16,000 income per year as a result. The NUS also receive £17,000 from these sales. (Above figures are net of VAT).
The University of York Student\' Union, through it\'s affiliation to NUS, is a shareholder in NUS Services Limited (NUSSL). NUSSL buys collectively to achieve lower prices and attract higher promotional spends from major companies to the benefit of YUSU\'s trading areas, such as Your:Shop.
The University of York Students\' Union currently receives £10,000 in restrospective payments through the NUSSL purchasing power per annum.
