Vulnerable targets will always tend to attract crime - and if you're walking home, tired and emotional and a bit the worse for wear after a night in gallery you'll be at risk. Crime stats show that 16 - 25 year old men are most at risk of violent crime, but it isn't worth the risk for anyone.
There are a plethora of taxi firms that will take you home cheaply after a night out - either waiting outside or at the end of a mobile - avoid numbers you don't recognise, but otherwise jump in and be home safe, dry and fast!If you don't already have them in there add one of these to your phone:
A team Taxis: 01904 643 111
Ebor taxis: 01904 624 073
Streamline Taxis: 01904 623737
659 659: 01904 659659
EVEN IF you aren't worse for wear, if you're walking back late from campus (or town) you may be putting yourself at unnecessary risk. There are three services which can help you in this situation:
Our night minibus service will pick you up from campus in the evening and take you anywhere in York. There is no compulsory charge for the service, although if you're able to contribute something it massively increases the services viability.
The Night bus from York city back to campus. This runs until 3:15 am Monday - Saturday and is a great & cheap way to get home (about £2.50)
University Taxi - payment service: This essentially means that, if you can proove that you're a student at York (your Uni I.D. will do) the University will lend you the money for your taxi through a porters lodge. You'll ahve to pay it back, but if you're skint then its a good way of getting home...! ALSO if you're on campus and completely stuck for a way to get home the University may also lend you the money - just check with some porters.
Student intra college escorting service: The University also provides, through securit services, an escorting service to any point on campus if you're feeling vulnerable at night time. For more information on either this or the taxi service just check here University Security page
If all else fails and you ABSOLUTELY MUST walk home at night then bring a security alarm with you, hold the alarm in your hand, hanging from a bag (or similar) by the rip cord....and if the need arises then yank it out. The idea is the noise puts people off....but its no substitute for walking home with a mate. Plus that way you have someone to talk to other than your ipod....
You can collect loads of security information, personal attack alarms as well as other bits from the Advice and Support Centre - just pop in and ask!
