There is a lot of support for you at York if you find, for whatever reason, that you need some help. York's Open door team is an incredibly flexible and accessible service which is designed to help students going through the full range of emotional, psychological or mental health difficulties. The website provides you with a good range of information for self help if you're looking for some information to help with low level stress, but don't hold back from emailing them at opendoor@york.ac.uk if you want an appointment - an initial appointment can work out what help they can give you or even be sufficient to give you the coping mechanisms you need to get through a period of stress. The important point is that you won’t get turned away, and whatever you’re going through the link with open door will be one that can help you through.
There are a wealth of other support services out there though. If you just feel you need to talk something through with someone, then your college tutors, dean and provost are there for you when you need them – just check out the college websites to find out how to get in touch. Similarly you can come into the Advice and Support Centre when we’re open (10:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday) and we’ll be happy to hear whatever you’ve been going through.
Night time can be the hardest time to deal with the things that get to you – if there’s no one around it can feel difficult or lonely. If you are in this situation, then there’s someone for you to contact. Nightline is staffed by student volunteers throughout the night – 8pm to 8am. They’re there to listen to what you’re going through, they provide a confidential listening service by phone or in person throughout the night. Check out their website for some more information.
If, at any point, you feel that you’re in a situation where you need to see someone urgently call 3333 on campus (01904 433 333 off) – they’ll be able to help you, or they'll find someone who can.
