Publicity

The first, and most important lesson to learn is that every event is different. Club D requires very little advertising, and sells (in the main) based on word-of-mouth. Big D is very different, as it requires many more people and is thus advertised heavily.

Freshers Week events are largely sold based on our hand-out and website, so few posters and flyers are required (having sold out prior to term starting in recent years).

Your:Print

Your:Print is able to offer you a colour photocopying and printing facility, and advice on printing and advertising on campus in general.  We can offer you competitve runs on both A4 and A3 black and white and colour printing.

Prontaprint

Prontaprint are our recommended printers for A3 posters at the moment. We recommend that you purchase 350 posters to cover kitchens and general boards or 500 posters if you want to REALLY make an impact.

On 170gsm paper, 350 A3 posters will set you back £105.
On 170gsm paper, 500 A3 posters will set you back £139.

Turnaround is approximately three days. Contact LISA on 01904 691 653 or e-mail her on sales@york.prontaprint.com.

Peter Turpin

The Students’ Union use Turpin printers for all our high volume printing (500 copies or more).

On 170gsm paper, 500 A3 posters will set you back £139 + VAT
On 170gsm paper, 750 A3 posters will set you back £149 + VAT

On 170gsm paper, 500 A2 posters will set you back £259 + VAT
On 170gsm paper, 750 A2 posters will set you back £274 + VAT

Turnaround is about five days. Contact SIMON on 01904 479511 or e-mail him on enquiries@pturpin-associates.co.uk

Kitchens

How many posters do you need? Well, there are 388 University kitchens, so decide for yourself:

Alcuin 62
Derwent 50 (inc 10 Edens Court)
Goodricke 40
Halifax 110 (inc 40 UPP)
James 47
Langwith 40
Vanbrugh 39 (inc 30 off campus)

If you want to put flyers under bedroom doors, you’ll need about 2,000 to do main campus (this is not possible in Alcuin, Halifax or James).

Regulated Boards

We have poster boards situated across campus, regulated by our Marketing staff. If you drop six of your posters in to our Red Poster Box in the Marketing Department (Student Centre, Goodricke College) we’ll put them up for you.

Internet

We can now sell out a gig just on internet advertising alone, so don’t underestimate its power!

Your college chair has access to YUSU:News, our e-mail newsletter that goes out to 5,500 students every Thursday during term time. A post in this can’t fail but help to fill your event.

This website, yusu.org, has over 500 students visiting every day, so make sure that you event is listed in the “Events in Week X” box at the top of the page and that you’ve got more detail in a “What’s Happening?” post on the front page. Your college Chair or our Societies and Communications Officer can help you with this.

Tried and tested, Daily Info is a must when publicising an event. Check it out here and follow the link to make a post. You can choose two days on which your message will be included. Daily Info has both a print and an online edition, and has the second highest distribution of all our communications media.
