Recycling

On campus
Each kitchen has recycling bins for different materials - cans, cardboard, glass, paper, plastic. When they get full, it is your responsibility to empty them into the recycle wheelie bins just outside your accommodation block (it’s a lot better than it used to be!).
There are recycling bins for cans and plastic bottles in the entrance foyer of most buildings on campus, and blue lidded paper recycling bins near photocopiers and printers.
Recycle your old computer equipment and pick up a bargain, with all profits going to RAG, check out the Computer Recycling Project
If you can’t find recycling facilities or have any recycling questions, email us at environment@yusu.org
Off campus
Most residents can recycle from their homes using the council's fortnightly kerbside collection service. Depending on where you live, you may be able to recycle glass, cans, paper, plastic and cardboard. The box and bag are emptied once a fortnight on the same day of the week as your rubbish collection.
To find out what recycling service is provided in your area, what day your rubbish is collected, or to order a recycling box, contact the City of York Council.

Reducing waste
Prevention is usually better than the cure, and so it is with waste.
If you reuse carrier bags, choose products without ridiculous amounts of packaging, and only buy what you need, then you will have reduced the negative environmental impact of producing those goods and saved your time since you will have less waste to empty/recycle!
Print on both sides of the paper when possible: check out this facebook guide.
Charity Shops
Give your unwanted stuff to a good cause - take it to a charity shop. Then get some wanted stuff at ridiculously low prices - kitchenware, clothes, books, music and more! You'll be surprised at the quality, selection and prices on offer.
It's environmentally friendly consumerism so shop away guilt free - because you're re-using, it saves the energy and resources which would have been required to produce new things, not to mention that the money's going to good causes. Oh, and it won't burn a massive hole in your pocket either, so you can indulge yourself on a student budget.
Most of the charity shops in York are found concentrated along Goodramgate (aka Charity Shop Alley), with Fossgate and Walmgate also having a fairly high concentration - see the map below. There are others scattered throughout the city - have a wonder and you'll stumble upon them.
