Fairtrade

What is Fairtrade and why bother?

As the mark says - Fairtrade guarantees producers a better deal. Very basically that means the people that grow Fairtrade coffee, chocolate, tea and all the other products, are paid a fair price for their produce. They can afford to educate their children, they don’t have to sell their product at a loss, going into debt and losing their land and they can plan for the future because they know what price they’ll get all year, at the beginning of the year. Fairtrade is an easy way for people like us to help people who really need it.

Fairtrade University Status

We are now a Fairtrade University! This means the Fairtrade Foundation have recognised our commitment to Fairtrade, and the work students have done to promote Fairtrade and their continued support of the Fair Trade campaign.

To achieve this, the University and YUSU have met 5 goals set by the Fairtrade Foundation including making available Fairtrade in all campus catering outlets and shops and continued campaigning to increase Fairtrade on campus. But the work doesn’t stop just because we have status, we will continue to fight for further promotion and consumption of Fairtrade on campus, and create long term goals to help other universities and higher education establishments in York achieve Fairtrade status.
