Write a Motion

If you want to change something within your Union, a good place to start is writing a motion. This handy guide should help with that.

Questions regarding motions and submissions of motions should be sent to the Chair of Rules Committee (ruleschair@yusu.org).

If you want to fill out our standard formatted form, you can download it here

Constitutional Amendments need to be submitted to the Rules of Chair Committee eight working days before each UGM. Ordinary motions should be submitted by noon, three working days before.

Motions should be laid out in the following way:

"A clear, concise title that sums up the motion"

Proposed by:
Seconded by:

THIS UNION NOTES

- Here, you should state facts regarding the issue (not opinion).

THIS UNION BELIEVES

- Here, you need to describe what position you want YUSU to take on the issue.

- This is what you want the Union Officers to believe and work on.

THIS UNION RESOLVES

- Here, you describe what specific action you want YUSU to take.

- This could be actioning a certain officer or the Executive committee to do something (for example, meeting with someone, campaigning, voting a certain way, etc)...

So, your motion might look like this...

Skateboard Ramp at The Sports Centre

Proposed by: Sam Bayley
Seconded by: Matt Burton, Joey Ellis and Grace Fletcher-Hall

THIS UNION NOTES

1. That the University of York (UoY) does not currently have a skateboard ramp
2. That skateboarding is a popular pastime for many UoY students
3. That skateboard facilities are abundant at other Universities

THIS UNION BELIEVES

1. That many UoY students would benefit from having a skateboard ramp
2. That the UoY will fall behind its sporting rivals if a skateboard ramp is not installed

THIS UNION RESOLVES

1. To mandate the President and AU President to campaign for a skateboard ramp at the University Sports Centre

Is this helpful? If not, or if you've got any further questions, just email ruleschair@yusu.org
