Save Our Bars

In March 2006, YUSU learned that the University planned to close some of the campus bars, some nights a week, in an effort to 'save' money.

YUSU ran a campaign against the propsed closures, to show the University that the college bars were an integral part of student life at this University.

The campaign included:

  • A BARCOTT!
  • A week of activities in all campus bars, organised by college committees
  • Constructive engagement with the University
  • Campus wide campaign including T-Shirts, Posters in Bedroom windows and banners

The campaign was a success and the University kept campus bars open into the Summer Term of 2006 full time.  However, as with the national trend, bar trade was decreasing and as such a 'Model 29+' was introduced for the 2006/2007 academic year.

YUSU, along with College Committees are constantly working to support the current campus bar opening model and will continue to do so.

Why did we think campus bar closures were bad?

College spirit will be destroyed
Without bars open every night the activities of the JCRC will be severely restricted to those that can make £££’s for the University. The University will cancel events that don’t make enough. No more quiet night with a beer in Langwith bar - it might not be there.

Quiet nights are just as important
Societies and Sports Clubs thrive on the quiet nights in the quiet bars for their socials. The University might not make money, but their bars are providing us - their customers - with an important service.

Restricted opening will be confusing

Ever heard of a bar that only opened on certain days? Imagine if Weatherspoons closed on quiet nights! How would you know when to go!?

Campus is safer than town
We all know that Campus is a safer place to drink than in town. Some students very rarely leave. Should we be asking them to?

Closing won’t make much!
Closing the bars for half the time will only save £50k, a very small sum for such a change. This can EASILY be raised via other methods, we just need the chance.
