Colleges

What Are Colleges?

The college system is a major part of student life at York. Every student is a member of a college and live there for their first year at York but remain a part of its community throughout their whole time here. Each of the eight colleges has its own distinctive identity, atmosphere, facilities and history. There is also a very healthy college rivalry at York, whether its for the College Cup, the best events or the most money raised for RAG each year.

All undergraduate students are automatically a member of their college's Junior Common Room (JCR) and each college also has an elected Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC). They are voted in with a cross college ballot each year and work hard to make sure that you are having the best university experience possible. This is done in a variety of ways, from lobbying the university for better college facilities, kitting out their common rooms with decent equipment, putting on great events throughout the year, organising trips, running bar quizzes and finding out what you want! Running for a JCRC position can be one of the most rewarding things you can do at uni so look out for elections at the end of every Autumn term!

Every college always has a lot going on throughout the term so be sure to check out their websites and facebook groups!
