What we do
Chaired by two elected YUSU officers, the Environment & Ethics committee coordinates events, services and campaigns across the university.
York is an ideal city for cycling with an extensive network of cycling routes. There are many outlets to pick up a cheap second hand bike, including a bike auction organised by us at least once a year. Numerous bicycle retailers and repairers can also be found all over the city.
A map of York’s cycle network can be found on the City of York Council website. The network includes many quiet and traffic free routes, so if you’re not a fan of main roads, there are plenty of options.
Unfortunately, due to the popularity of cycling here, York suffers from a high rate of cycle theft. However, there are a few simple steps which will dramatically reduce the chance of your bike being stolen. Buy a good quality lock and secure your bike wherever you leave it, even at home. Attach your bike tightly to an immovable object. Lock both the frame and the wheels.
Keep a record of your frame number and take a picture of your bike to improve the chances of it being recovered if it is stolen. North Yorkshire Police are regularly on campus providing an electronic tagging service. Otherwise, contact a local bike shop.
York has an extensive bus network and buses run regularly from the university to the city centre, as well as less regularly to other parts of the city. A map of the network can be found here.
York is very well connected by its railway station. Trains run regularly to and from Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, London and Edinburgh. If booked in advance, rail fares can be cheap. Ordering tickets online is easy and straightforward.
With a 16–25 Railcard, available for all those in full time education at £26, you can get a ⅓ off rail fares across Britain.
