What we do
Chaired by two elected YUSU officers, the Environment & Ethics committee coordinates events, services and campaigns across the university.
Events we run to help you be more environmentally and ethically responsible.
We love cycling and want as many York students as possible to have the opportunity to own a bike. That’s why one of our most important and popular events is the bike auction.
Through an agreement with the university, we pay for all bikes abandoned on campus over the holidays to be collected. We are then able to sell these at auction. The profit we make from the sale goes into the Environment & Ethics account to fund other environmental and ethical projects.
The auction usually takes place on the Wednesday of week 2 of each term. We’ll post details on the website and our Facebook group.
Every year, loads of crockery is abandoned in kitchens around campus. Together with YUSU Volunteering, we collect it all at the end of the summer term and sell it at our annual crockery sale.
This is a great opportunity to pick up some cheap kitchen equipment and help to reduce waste at the same time! It means that you’ve got one less thing to worry about when packing your suitcase, and one less thing to drain your student loan!
The sale happens in Week 1 of the Autumn Term.
