Henley Royal Regatta

Getting off to a strong start UYBC top eight, stroked by Michael Williams, rowed into a strong headwind. Settling at rate 35 cox Rosie Winter called for a push at 1000 meters in, powering the crew towards the grandstands. Being chased down by an American crew, York made a final push for the finish.

Despite a solid effort York was unable to qualify, finishing in a time of 7:27.1, making them the 15 fastest non-qualifier, finishing 33 out of 59 overall. Although York was unable to qualify the crew was pleased with its performance after posting a quicker time than both top Leeds University crews, and Lancaster’s eight, 3 crews which had had a slight edge on York throughout the year.

Henley Women's Regatta

York entered the intermediate coxed fours, with a crew of Ashley Haycock (cox), Jillian Tongue, Harriet Edmonds, Alix Odgers and Raeesa Chowdhury, the most competitive of all categories with 52 entries and only 32 qualifying. The time trials began at 9am with the intermediate eights. Watching them race down the course from Temple Island to Upper Thames Boat Club, overall 1500m, it was clear that the weather conditions were affecting the crews. The strong head wind meant that the crews were suffering to hold a high rate and to keep their length of the stroke. The coxed fours time trail began at 10.15am, the crews were set off in alphabetical order and 30 seconds apart. This meant that York was set off 3rd from last having Vesta and York City to push off.

York’s crew started their time trial at a rate of 38 strokes per minute, settling to 34 after a minute into the race. They got into a good rhythm, keeping the catches clean and strokes long, sitting back into the head wind they began to close the gap with the crew in front. Looking strong the crew made a push past the enclosures and onto the final few hundred metres. An increase in rate to 36 powered York over the finish line. Finishing in a time of 6minutes and 7 seconds was impressive but unfortunately was not enough to qualify them for the next round.

Marlow Regatta

marlow
York’s Senior men’s eight were placed in an extremely tough heat for the 2k sprint at Marlow.

York put in a solid performance bringing them to finish in 5th place.

Although this was not enough to allow the men to qualify, if they had been in any other of the four heats qualification would have been inevitable as overall the crew finished 8th out of 30 crews.

This left the crew in high spirits looking forward to next weeks qualifiers at Henley Royal Regatta.
