Officer report - 18th June 2009
Since our last blog, we’ve been finalising our plans for Welcome Week, working closely with JCRC Reps to make sure there is LGBT information in new and returning student information packs, contacting people around the University to make sure there is plenty of information about LGBT available next term and making sure that we get plenty of awareness about what we're up to amongst new and returning students at the beginning of next term.
We’ve nearly finished our website. It should be finalised in the next couple of weeks and we’ll be able to publicise it over the summer break. It’s full of welfare, social and campaign informaion and should become the first port of call for people who want to find out about LGBT life in York, and in particular YUSU LGBT and LGBT Social.
We’ve also been working on a few minor constitutional amendments that are going into this week's UGM. We want to tidy up our section of the constitution in preparation for a more serious re-write.
We contacted the publisher of the York Survival Guide and sent in some information about trans to help improve the fairly limited trans section of the guide. We’ve also been working with Sarah Fennell, who is a member of York Council’s Social Inclusion Working Group, to create an event which aims to get more LGBT people interested in what the SIWG does and to get input from LGBT people on the way York Council works for LGBT people. This will be taking place next Tuesday from 18.15 in G/020.
In Week 9, we are co-hosting a discussion on gender and faith with the Women’s Committee and the University Chaplains. This is a quiet, pastoral event which aims to open up discussion and allow people to explore the issue in a safe, non-contentious manner.
Finally, we’ve got some great events in the pipeline for next term: debates, a possible late license event, some campaign ideas and some quieter social events. We’ve also made contact with the Equal Opportunities Office with the aim to discuss how their policy affects LGBT people, and we’re going to start work with the University on LGBT provision.
