Blog
I can't think of an original or exciting subject line...
Right... well our final UGM is coming, and Matt informs me that it's blog time. So, what have I been up to?
Well, it's been quite a busy term. The Big Idea Week, the YUM Awards, Society Budgets and the Student Activities Office are to name a few things I've been working on over the past few weeks.
Starting with the Big Idea, we ran this week-long campaign in Week 7 and have attracted 100s of ideas across campus on a whole range of issues. The ideas vary from getting Firefox installed on the campus computers, creating more provision to students that live on campus, and putting more mint in the Courtyard salad. We’ve put all of these ideas into an online database, and very soon will start to contact the relevant authorities about how we can start to get things changed for the better. Thanks to everyone that submitted an idea on this.
The YUM Awards is something I’m looking forward to greatly. To be held on Tuesday of Week 10, we have 16 awards up for grabs relating to a varied number of disciplines across the media spectrum. YSTV, Vision, URY and Nouse will be battling it out for these accolades, which will be judged by a team of professionals that we’ve managed to source with Anna, the YUM Chair. Tickets are on sale now, so get yours at www.yusu.org/tickets to make sure you don’t miss yours.
Society Budgets are the next thing I’ve been up to. Over the past few weeks I’ve met with 60 societies about their budgets and am now compiling the finalised versions. This has been slightly delayed because of the number of late submissions, and the softer side of me appears to have got the better of me, as I’ve accepted them all. Perhaps I am getting old (and weak).
The Student Activities Office is something incredibly exciting which I’ve also been working hard on in the past few weeks. Vision will be covering this in their next issue, but in short, we’ve finally decided what to do in the shop in-between Your Shop and Costcutter, and it’s really good news for all of our societies, charity/volunteers and sports clubs - so stay tuned for more details on that. I do hope it will be an impressive step forward for our Student Activities, and look forward to it being built over the Summer.
Finally, in addition to this, I’ve been helping Matt with the Summer Ball, watched our media societies wipe the floor at the NUS Awards, ratified a further 8 societies, ran the Roses closing ceremony, and appeared and quoted to various media sources both local and national.
RS.
